Meet Jennifer Burton

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Jennifer Burton, one of the owners of Ultimate Destination Weddings.

A love and desire to travel has been part of my soul for as long as I can remember. I find so much peace, clarity and motivation through travel. I always joke, other people save for retirement and new homes, I save to see the world.

I have found the perfect balance of my love of travel and passion for weddings. I love talking all things weddings and hearing so many different love stories. Part of running our own travel company was we wanted to ensure all clients receive the best service and least stressful experience in planning a destination wedding, and creating a career opportunity for travel specialists who want to have complete freedom and control of their lives.

Hence, creating Ultimate Experiences. For our clients, for our Ultimate Specialists and for ourselves. We all just truly love what we do.

What is your favourite destination (s) that you’ve travelled to?

This is like picking your favourite child… you have to say all of them, but you know there is a top contender!!

Sri Lanka was one of my favourite destinations that I travelled to. I went for my honeymoon in 2015 and was just so astounded by the ecological diversity, we went from beaches, to an national park, to tea lands, to the mountains. The food was incredible, the people were so kind and helpful. Oh did I mention the food? I could eat egg hoppers every morning!

What destination is tops on your bucket list?

I feel like I need to break this down by continent – because there are a lot

Caribbean

  • Dominica

Europe

  • Scotland & Czech Republic

Asia

  • Vietnam & Japan

Africa

  • Tanzania & Uganda

New Zealand

North America

  • Newfoundland
  • Oregon

South America

  • Galapagos Islands

How many years have you been in travel? Any related experience you’d like to note?

I have worked in travel for the last 11 years, and dreamed about it since I was a little girl.

I started my career in a busy mall, which I didn’t love because we were too busy to be able to have any quality time with our clients. I then moved into groups & weddings travel, which I really enjoyed, but definitely underappreciated the importance of weddings (I was young, free, and never thought I would get married!). From there I moved into corporate travel for the sports and entertainment industry.

I am so appreciative of the opportunities I was given to explore these areas of travel, and after I had my own wedding in 2015, I knew that I wanted to be part of making everyone’s wedding dreams come true!

Tracy and I started Ultimate Destination Weddings in fall 2015 and have never looked back. I am so grateful to be part of so many wonderful couple’s most important day – and then for it to be travel related too! It is my dream career!

Best travel tip?

Don’t forget to stop and use your Brain Camera (your eyes). So often we live behind our camera while travelling trying to capture the amazingness we are experiencing and forget to just take the whole thing in too.

When I was in Africa last September, every sunset and sunrise we had we would all try and capture it on camera, it never compared to what we were actually seeing in front of us. I actually do stop, and open and close my eyes to snap a photo of where I am and put it in my memory to be retrieved at anytime. Remember what you are wearing, who you are with, what you smell. Our Brain Camera is a very powerful tool!

My favourite toy as a kid was a globe

I had this Fischer-Price globe when I was a kid, and it lit up and you could move it around and look through a viewfinder into different countries. While there were maybe 15-20 things to see on the map, I would look at them everyday!

* Thank you internet for having photos of all of our favourite childhood memories available!!

My first big trip out of North America was to India

I did not travel when I was young. My father worked in Barbados, so I did go on a couple trips there in my teens and then I did not travel again until I was an adult. I went to a couple all inclusive resorts in Cuba.

It was time for me to spread my wings and go on a “Real Trip” and so my girlfriend and I decided to backpack in India! We flew into Mumbai, went to Kerala state and stayed in some beautiful coastal towns, we went inland and stayed in a Tree House, and then spent an afternoon in Bangalore on our way out. We took planes, trains and automobiles, and had a few scary encounters, but mostly just wild adventures. When people ask what I thought of India, my response is always the same, it was one of the best experiences of my life. It is a country of contrast, you can be walking down a beautiful cobble stoned road in Mumbai, only to turn the corner to see a child eating garbage off the street. You walk by a shop and smell the incredible aroma of champa incense and then walk past some hot garbage.  The sound of non stop car horns, and then the quite rolling of the Arabian Sea. Your senses will be overloaded in India! One thing you will never feel in India is alone.

My pets are my babies

My husband and I chose that our only children will only be four legged and furry.

Charlotte (RIP) – Our beautiful rescue puppy from Barbados.

Wilbur – our resident Fun Police (he wants to see none of it in this house).

Kevin – Our newest edition.

I wore pants to my wedding

We had a small local wedding with immediate family (I knew my siblings wouldn’t be able to travel, so I opted out of the destination wedding). We planned our wedding around our honeymoon. February was the best time to visit Sri Lanka, so we got married in February.

I chose to have a jumpsuit made. Our day turned into a perfect, winter wonderland wedding.
